KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – A bright MBA project team from the Graduate School of Business, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM-GSB), operating under the banner of “EcoVenture” and supervised by Dr. Ummu Ajirah Abdul Rauf, has successfully completed the “Re-WASTE” sustainability-driven graduation project across multiple locations in Malaysia. The initiative delivered environmental education, community-focused activities and green-entrepreneurship pilot trials to promote waste-to-value concepts and advance circular-economy community development.
Deeply aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the “EcoVenture-Re-WASTE” project translates business-management expertise into tangible sustainability-oriented social action. A core highlight of the initiative is its full-cycle practical model covering environmental outreach, on-site community engagement and market-oriented product piloting. The team hosted a series of events including interactive workshop debates, comedy-integrated public talk shows, beach-cleaning volunteer campaigns and a closing open workshop with pilot product sales. Reusable posters and brochures were adopted throughout all activities to cut printing waste, putting resource-efficiency principles into practice, directly advancing SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Moving beyond environmental awareness-raising, the initiative turned recyclable waste into market-ready goods by developing recycled-fabric canvas bags made from discarded textile materials. The team conducted cost-benefit evaluation and on-site pilot sales to verify the commercial feasibility of waste-upcycled products. A business-model manual was also distributed to share practical know-how for waste-driven entrepreneurship. Combining educational campaigns with real-world commercial trials, the project reached university students, general audiences and local community volunteers, demonstrating that environmental protection and profitable business operations can co-exist, which helps advance inclusive sustainable development.
The successful delivery of this high-impact sustainability project illustrates the value of multi-stakeholder collaboration, serving as a practical real-world application of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. The programme was realised through joint efforts drawing on UKM-GSB academic guidance under Dr. Ummu Ajirah Abdul Rauf, participating university campuses, local comedy performers and community-based NGOs. MBA team members acted as key coordinators to align all collaborating parties and build a replicable youth-led practice framework for circular-economy exploration.
Looking ahead, the EcoVenture team hopes the “Re-WASTE” initiative will serve as a reference benchmark for youth-driven sustainability projects, inspiring more young practitioners to explore circular-economy and green-business solutions and build a more sustainable society for future generations.
